FLEET OF FOOT

FLEET OF FOOT

THE LAST TWENTY FIVE YEARS

WERE SO FLEET OF FOOT,

THEY PASSED IN DAYS…

A TWINKLE IN A RHEUMY EYE,

A SAD SONG’S REFRAIN,

REMEMBERS YESTERDAY’S LAMENT

OH FOR THE DAYS OF YOUTH,

WHICH LASTED THE LONGEST OF LEAP YEARS…

A DAY WOULD BE A LIFETIME,

INTERMINABLE AS DOUBLE LATIN

OR AS HEADY AS A FORTNIGHT’S HOLIDAY…

ALL IN ONE DAY.

AND THE DAYS STRETCH NOW LIKE A SALMON’S RUN,

WAITING BELOW THE WHITE WATER,

FOR THE MOMENTARY LEAP,

ACROSS THE DIVIDE,

AND BACK INTO YOUR LOVING ARMS,

AND BACK TO THE BEGINNING AGAIN.
