BLACKOUT

OK, THIS PICTURE NO LONGER EXISTS… I PAINTED OVER IT. I LOVE BASQUIAT AND TRIED VERY HARD TO EMULATE HIS STYLE.

1914

I WAS AIMING FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS, BUT WHILST HIS LOOK NATURAL, MINE JUST LOOKS LIKE A POOR FAKE. I LIKE HIS WORK VERY MUCH, BUT IT ISN’T MINE. MY NATURAL STYLE IN ABSTRACT FORM IS MORE AKIN TO MATISSE/KANDINSKY AND PICASSO… I’M NOT CLAIMING THEIR EMINENCE JUST THAT I NATURALLY WORK IN THEIR WAY. BASQUIAT HAD A WAY OF WORKING WHICH INCORPORATED HIS HIGH INTELLECT WITH A NATURAL CHILD-LIKE PAINTING TECHNIQUE… I AM NOT A NATURAL PAINTER, MY TECHNIQUES ARE HARD HEWN BY PRACTICE, I AM BY NATURE AN ARTIST,  NOT A PAINTER BUT A POET, I USE MY POETIC SENSIBILITY TO CREATE MY PAINTINGS, IN THE SAME WAY I AM NOT A MUSICIAN BUT I MADE LOTS OF MUSIC, BY USING MY POETIC EAR.  WHAT THIS ATTEMPT HAS TAUGHT ME, IS THAT I HAVE TO USE MY OWN STYLE. I’M QUITE HAPPY TO STEAL OTHER PEOPLES TECHNIQUES BUT I’M ALSO RATIONAL ENOUGH TO KNOW WHEN THEY DON’T FIT.

THIS DIDN’T FIT. A LESSON LEARNT,

ON TO THE NEXT CANVAS.
